Yes! Both Harvard Yard and MIT's campus are open to the public at no charge. Free self-guided tours are available. Harvard's Art Museums have free admission on certain days. MIT Museum charges a small fee.
For Boston and Cambridge, public transit (MBTA) is excellent. For Cape Cod, the Berkshires, and Western MA, a car is recommended. Amtrak serves Springfield and other cities.
